Cold fury: EU reacts to US stance on Jerusalem

The European Union’s response to US President Donald Trump’s stance on Jerusalem has been met with cold fury in senior EU echelons, with one political analyst in conversation with The Middle East in Europe describing the development as “yet another American own goal.”

In private conversations shared with The Middle East in Europe, EU officials warned the United States in the event could be the ultimate loser if it went ahead with implementing its Jerusalem move .

The officials warned European ties with the United States could never be the same again if Washington went ahead with measures altering an almost sacrosanct status of Jerusalem in clear violation of the UN and other international resolutions in support of a two-state peace deal involving Israel and Palestine.

US Secretary of State Rex W Tillerson was an early recipient of that “cold fury” when he was roundly snubbed as he met with Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

“Tillerson’s reception in Brussels was distinctly chilly, as disappointment among European diplomats in President Trump’s nationalistic tone and insulting messages on Twitter built into quiet fury,” The New York Times reported.

In her brief public appearance beside Tillerson, Mogherini “gave the kind of stone-cold statement of facts that she would normally provide standing beside her Russian counterpart, not the American one,” The New York Times said.

“A way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as a future capital of both states,” Mogherini  said.
